I drink coffee at home but usually only a single cup at a sitting, so I use a pod (K-cup) coffee maker. I also prefer uncluttered countertops with room to work so I've been storing the coffee maker in a cupboard, bringing it out to make a cup and then putting it back. The machines I've used are small enough to make this fairly convenient. However, my latest one is now dying and I thought I'd like to try replacing it with a more-conventional pod maker with a water tank.
The new unit would be too large for the stow-it-in-a-cupboard approach so it would need to sit out somewhere. Of course then the counter-space issue reared its ugly head so I bit the bullet and decided to extend the end of one of the counters to provide some out-of-the-way room for the new machine.
The extension "table" is just a flat surface mounted to the end of the countertop. It was made from Cherry to match the kitchen cupboards but I couldn't think of any good way to make the actual design seem to match. So instead I added some trim that would match the skirt of a nearby dining room table. The parallel-line trim is composed of embedded African Blackwood that stretches around the outside edge. There are only a few pieces so
the actual construction took just a few days. For installation, two angle brackets (cherry, of course) screw to the underside of the countertop overhang to support the table. This provides a little coffee station that doesn't clutter the kitchen.
